The MISSION Act
Veterans Addiction Treatment Benefits
Accessing Community Care via The MISSION Act
If you are enrolled in VA health care and the services you need are not available at a VA facility or within a reasonable amount of time, you may be eligible for a referral to one of our Hero’s Path campuses.
For a recommended service to be eligible, it must meet at least one of the following criteria:
-
- The service is not available at a VA medical facility
- There is not a full-service VA medical facility in your state
- You qualify under the “grandfather” distance-related
provision of the Veterans Choice Program - The VA cannot provide care within 28 days of your request
or at a facility within a 60-minute drive of your home - Care from a Community Care provider is determined to be
in your best medical interest - A VA service line does not meet certain quality standards
If your situation meets any of these criteria, you can ask your VA provider for approval to be referred to Hero’s Path.
The Need for High-Quality, Specialized Addiction Treatment for Veterans
Addiction is a growing problem among our veterans. 1-in-10 vets are diagnosed with substance use disorders, a rate higher than the general population. When considering the fact that, on average, 22 veterans die by suicide each day, often preceded by drug or alcohol use, the issue becomes even greater.
Veterans Affairs (VA) offers benefits that provide vets coverage for mental health services, including addiction treatment. However, the sheer number of veterans receiving care at VA facilities often means limited options or a long waiting list.
Through the MISSION Act, the VA offers additional treatment opportunities through Community Care providers, giving veterans better access to high-quality care when they need it.

Creating the Foundation for Recovery
“My experience here has been amazing. The energy and passion the staff brings to the vets are a great asset to US Vets and Hero’s Path. They made sure we received everything we needed, comforted us when we were having a bad day, and loved on us when we needed it. The smiles and words of encouragement have been first-class. “
